Tits & Co. is a not-for-profit platform that recognizes and supports female and female-identifying artists from multi-disciplinary practices. Co-founders Marisa Mu and Manuela Perez give us an insight into who they are as female-identifying artists and why they believe in the power of tits and community.

Before we get into talking about the Tits & Co. platform, how did the two of you meet?

M: I met Manuela back when I was traveling through Italy in the summer of 2016. I was in Florence for the world’s biggest menswear tradeshow called Pitti Uomo and we met one fateful night through a mutual friend’s dinner party. I loved her energy and we got along like a house on fire.

How did Tits & Co. begin? Tell us the story behind how you came to starting Tits & Co.

M: I remember so vividly when Manuela and I were just having one of our regular video calls talking about life and all the things going on in our lives. We were both going through a challenging period and I mentioned how I was trying to find creative inspiration and so I had google searched ‘the most successful artists of all time’ and was appalled at how there was not a single female on that list. And I then continued to tell Manuela that I was embarrassed that as a painter myself, the only prolific female artist I know is Frida Kahlo. And then we were discussing how there were definitely female artists back in that time just as there is within contemporary society, so why dont we know about them? Where are they? How can we reach them and inspire one another? This was the defining moment where Manuela and I realised we were onto something special because it was impacting the lives on so many people - not just ourselves.

Marisa, you are based in Sydney, Australia and Manuela, you are currently in Florence, Italy. You are based on the complete opposite sides of this planet and are working full-time within your own practices; how do you make Tits and Co. work with your schedules? Tell us a little bit about the roles you play within the organization and the expectations you have for one another.

Mari: For me, I have always been a sole trader or a contractor and so it was incredibly refreshing when we went into co-foundering this business together. It is so important to be on the same wavelength and also share the same values and vision as one another when it comes to a partnership in any form - whether in business or pleasure. Manuela and I compliment each other wonderfully and we often laugh about how it just aligns perfectly with who we are as individuals. I handle the content, business and legalities whilst Manuela takes reign on the creative front. We are playing to our strengths and I wouldn’t want to be partnered with anyone else but Manny, we trust and believe in each other and our vision so deeply. We respect each other’s personal endeavours and Tits & Co. is currently a passion project and so we invest our energies into building its community whenever we can and touch base with each other weekly.

Who came up with the name? And how did you decide on the logo design and creative direction?
